CAMDEN RETROFIT CREDITS
About the scheme
Camden Council in partnership with the HACT (Housing Association Charitable Trust) and PNZ Group have developed Camden Retrofit Credits, London’s first localised carbon crediting scheme that enables businesses to offset their emission by investing in Social Housing Retrofit projects within Camden.
The scheme verifies emission reductions and social value of retrofit projects, with carbon credits originated and sold to businesses to offset their residual emissions.
To ensure the environmental integrity of the issued credits, the scheme has been developed under the Verified Carbon Standard, the world’s leading certification program for emission reduction projects. The Retrofit Credit scheme is only the second UK-based verified scheme and the only scheme in the word originating carbon credits for decarbonisation of housing stock.
The scheme is pioneering in its approach and aims to address many of the concerns that exist with global offsetting schemes on quality, locality and integrity.
Some of the benefits associated with offsetting through the Camden Carbon Offsetting Scheme include:
- Acceleration of social housing retrofit within the borough.
- Contributes towards businesses sustainability goals and decarbonisation of the borough.
- Incorporates social value, measuring the positive impact retrofit has on residents’ lives.
- Local approach provides a more transparent and visible method for offsetting emissions compared to global offsetting schemes.
